1 killed in fiery car crash on I-5 at Mountlake Terrace transit station

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. – One person was killed Tuesday following a crash involving a vehicle fire on Interstate 5 near the 236th Street Southwest exit at the Mountlake Terrace Freeway Station, according to South County Fire.

Crews responded to reports of a vehicle on fire along northbound I-5 near the transit center exit. Officials say the vehicle struck a concrete elevator shaft and was fully engulfed in flames.

Emergency crews remained on scene where they confirmed one person, the sole occupant of the vehicle, dead.

Inspectors examined the structure for damage and cleared the elevator for normal operations, according to Sound Transit.

The northbound I-5 ramp to the transit station at 236th Street was fully blocked while troopers investigated the deadly, single-vehicle crash. Northbound bus service to the ramp at the freeway station was also temporarily shut down.

The station has reopened and is available for full bus operations.
