REDMOND, Washington — Microsoft’s artificial intelligence technology plays a pivotal role in the real-time strategic decisions made by the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff during the Super Bowl on Sunday. During the game, coaches and players of the Seahawks will utilize Microsoft Surface tablets equipped with AI tools, enabling them to review plays, analyze formations, and adapt strategies instantly. Monica Robbins, director of strategic partnerships at Microsoft, elucidates that cameras installed throughout the stadium capture data from each play, which is then transmitted in real time to the tablets. “Most of the time when you’re watching an NFL game, you actually see the device,” Robbins says. “But what happens behind the scenes is just as important.” The tablets are powered by Microsoft’s AI technology, including tools that enable coaches to swiftly categorize and sort play scenarios, such as third-down situations. Instead of manually scrolling through hours of video footage, coaches can instantly filter plays to find specific information. Robbins highlights the efficiency this provides: “If we need to prepare for a third-and-long situation and want to devise the best defensive strategy, it previously involved sorting through countless plays. Now, with Copilot filtering, I can immediately access third-and-long plays and see the formations and outcomes.” She describes these tablets as a “dashboard” that the coaching staff has access to before the game. This real-time data includes insights about players and their performance, such as identifying players who have executed more than 50 plays during the game. NFL restricts access to these dashboards to maintain competitive balance; all teams receive the same information simultaneously, after which each organization decides how best to utilize it. Robbins notes that while fans may only see coaches on the sidelines, there is a whole team of support staff working behind the scenes. “You might see coaches on the field, but there are so many people working hard to help the Seattle Seahawks succeed.” Microsoft’s AI technology is employed by all 32 NFL teams.
